In terms of Metaverse acceptance as well as advancements, 2022 was a barren year. Several of us have even speculated that Meta-type is finally on its way out. Nevertheless, major players from a variety of environments started applying for Metaverse trademark infringement while the platform was at its height. Unfortunately, 2022 was a terrible year for the Metaverse as well as the cryptocurrency industry as a whole due to the prolonged bearish trend. The announcement that the government of Seoul has begun work on the Metaverse Seoul project has excited the Metaverse community. This initiative would provide municipal services to the citizens of South Korea’s capital city in a digital format.

The portal would also provide individuals with access to government documents as well as the ability to register specific sorts of objections. An important function of Metaverse Seoul is disseminating up-to-date data to its residents about paying local taxes. Specifically, individuals will be able to post queries about taxes and get comprehensive responses via the online hub. The Seoul Metropolitan Authority envisions the Metaverse Seoul initiative becoming routine for its people, giving them quick and simple accessibility to a broad variety of local services without ever leaving their homes.

What is a Metaverse?

The term “Metaverse” refers to an online community composed of several distinct “virtual worlds” that are all linked together. This idea gained traction in sci-fi and also is currently being refined in the realms of computer games, AR, and social networking sites. The Metaverse is frequently envisioned as a futuristic iteration of the world wide web wherein consumers may have more lifelike and immersive experiences online and where the real and virtual worlds could be blended together without a hitch.

Estimates on Metaverse Seoul Project

On January 16, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon held a press conference to announce the official opening of Metaverse Seoul’s first phase after extensive beta testing. Visiting several of Seoul’s destinations, submitting some complaints, accessing official papers, and getting a response to inquiries about paying municipal taxes will all be possible in this digital universe, as described by the mayor as a “place of contact for inhabitants” of the country’s capital. The initial stage of the Metaverse project reportedly cost the local government roughly 2 billion won or $1.6 million. Oh Se-hoon said that the second phase would entail rendering Metaverse Seoul increasingly available to elderly people who have trouble physically traveling to municipal offices. Statistica estimates that by the year 2022, over 17 percent of South Koreans will be 65 or older.

The acceptance of the Metaverse as well as blockchain technology has been spearheaded by South Korea, a country renowned for its lightning-fast internet connections. Busan, South Korea, in conjunction with FTX, announced intentions to build a cryptocurrency exchange in the city in August. Meanwhile, the regional authority chose to stop working with several of FTX’s centralized exchange partners in November when the trade encountered problems.

Several businesses have allegedly announced intentions to create virtual offices after Facebook rebranded as Meta in October 2021, signaling a rise in worldwide engagement in the Metaverse. Adoption in 2022 may have been hindered by the crypto market meltdown and the failure of key platforms like FTX, Voyager Digital, and Celsius System.

Reason for Launching the Metaverse Seoul Project?

By launching Metaverse Seoul, the Seoul authorities aim to showcase the city as a pioneer in the area of augmented and virtual reality, which in turn is expected to stimulate innovation and economic development in the information technology industry. The goal of the project is to build a 3D digital replica of the city for use in marketing, instruction, as well as strategic development of the area. The administration also hopes to host interactive sessions, trade exhibits, and other events in the Metaverse so that visitors to the region won’t have to leave their homes to do so.
